Trygve Lie Plaza, named for the United Nations' first Secretary General, is a small block-long park well-hidden until a 2016 renovation turned the strip into a peaceful and relaxing seating area. The centerpiece of the plaza is Peace Clock, a work by sculptor Lina Viste Gronli that does not tell time in a traditional manner. Rather, twice a day, at 4:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the hour and minute hands form the peace sign. The international peace symbol is visible from the United Nations across First Avenue, connecting the organization’s ongoing mission with Lie’s lifelong aspirations of universal peace and freedom.
