PARKS CUTS RIBBON ON TAPPEN PARK

Commissioner Benepe today joined Council Member Michael McMahon to cut the ribbon on $1.53 million in renovations at Tappen Park in the Stapleton area of Staten Island.

“Thanks to generous funding from Mayor Bloomberg and City Council, Tappen Park has been revitalized with a decorative fountain and a seasonal display of new plantings,” said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “The renovated plaza is an ideal place for busy Staten Islanders to view the fall foliage, spend time with their families and take a break from shopping at nearby stores.”

The reconstructed park features new decorative steel perimeter fences and gates, new benches, trash receptacles, drinking fountains, bicycle racks and an ornamental water fountain.

Since 2002, Parks & Recreation has invested more than $70 million for Staten Island park improvements. Along with Tompkinsville Park, which broke ground on the same day as Tappen Park, this reconstruction represents Parks & Recreation’s urban revitalization efforts in the borough.

The City acquired Tappen Park after consolidation in 1898. The park’s name honors World War II veteran James Tappen, who died in the Battle of Argonne. Tappen Park is approximately 1.78 acres.
