NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, today joined Council Member Fernando Cabrera, students from PS 246, and local community members at St. James Park to cut the ribbon at the newly built basketball courts.
“I am especially proud to see the transformation of St. James Park and what it now represents for this community here in the Fordham section of the Bronx,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “Now with new basketball courts, a newly installed turf field, and tennis courts, St. James Park has become a multi-sport complex, allowing both children and adults the opportunity to come out and exercise. And for this opportunity, we are especially thankful to Council Member Cabrera and the Mayor’s office, for their contributions to this wonderful development.”
The project was completed with $150,000 from Council Member Cabrera and $15,000 in mayoral funding. The renovation continues a neighborhood tradition of advocating for parks offering another opportunity for residents and community members to stay active.
“The brand new basketball courts are the latest in a series of facility expansions at St. James Park,” said Councilmember Fernando Cabrera. “I would like to extend my gratitude to the New York City Parks Department, and especially Bronx Parks Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, for their continued collaboration. It is exciting to see the work that we have been doing to improve our community parks coming to fruition. I hope that the basketball courts will be enjoyed by many local residents, young and old.”
St. James Park has expanded its facilities through the years to accommodate the needs of its community in and around the Fordham section of the Bronx. It includes a new synthetic turf field, tennis, basketball, and handball courts, a playground, and a recreation center with a Computer Resource Center, fitness room, and game rooms for seniors, adults, and children.
