Two New Tot Lots Debut On Staten Island

Staten Island was treated to a “double-header” of celebrations on July 21 as Parks cut ribbons on two new playgrounds. First, Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined Council Member Vincent Ignizio to cut the ribbon on a tot lot playground at Drumgoole Road West. Later that afternoon, Parks & Recreation Staten Island Commissioner Adena Long joined Deputy Borough President Ed Burke and City Council Member Debi Rose to celebrate the construction of another new playground in Silver Lake Park. The construction of both playgrounds was possible because of a generous allocation of $1 million from Borough President James Molinaro.

At Drumgoole Tot Lot, new accessible recreational equipment, swings, benches, and picnic table allow young park users to play and climb. The playground is located within a triangular Greenstreet, which is bordered by Drumgoole Road West, Rathbun Avenue and Carlton Boulevard. The playground is appropriately named in honor of Father John Drumgoole, an Irish priest who was a child-care pioneer and founder of St. Vincent’s Home for Homeless Newsboys at Mount Loretto. The goal of this project was to provide a playground for community children of all abilities between the ages of two and five.

Silver Lake’s new tot lot also includes accessible play equipment, swings, painted games, benches and a picnic table, providing access to an exciting and educational playground for community children, parents and care-givers. The playground is located in the 210-acre Silver Lake Park, which also features other recreational amenities including an 18-hole golf course, sports fields and trails. With continuous improvements and additions, this park has maintained its legacy as an attractive Staten Island destination.

I just wanted to let you know our departments’ feedback on our team building event, Thursday, June 16, 2011. Since we were such a huge group we were divided into two groups. Our group leaders were Jorge Diaz and Tiberius St. Judge.

He was well organized and lead the group in a professional manner. He gave support and encouragement to each individual allowing each to rise to the challenge and experience the activities in their own way. He also asked at the end of a challenge for each person to self reflect on their experience and reflect on the teams experience as a whole.

Feedback I received from the group with Tiberius:
He was also well organized and lead the group in a professional manner. He was extremely engaging, patience and encouraging. He gave clear instructions but also took the time to explain the reasons for the need for safety. He motivated the group in a very nurturing way so each felt confident to achieve a task and overcome any fear in the high elements.

You are very fortunate to have such valued employees. The both gained the groups respect and admiration in a short time. Please pass this feedback onto whoever would give them the most benefit.

For me personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I dealt with you directly and was a bit apprehensive about this type of challenge for my department but your own patience and professionalism allowed me to overcome that anxiety and focus on how we can succeed in making this event fun for all. Which it truly was. I appreciate all your help and assistance.
