Parks Breaks Ground on Two Parks In Staten Island

On September 3, Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined Borough President James Molinaro, Senator Andrew Lanza, Assembly Member Michael Cusick, and Council Member Vincent Ignizio to break ground on construction of a new track and synthetic field at Corporal Thompson Park and a themed playground at Seaside Nature Park.

“Parks’ mission is to ensure that New Yorkers, particularly young ones, can maintain healthy lives and enjoy the outdoors,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Today’s ground breakings at Corporal Thompson Park and Seaside Nature Park further our goal to strengthen both minds and bodies. Thanks to funding allocations from the City Council and Mayor Bloomberg, Staten Island’s youngest residents will soon have a brand new athletic field and seaside playground.”

The new track and field at Corporal Thompson Park is being constructed with $2.6 million allocated by Council Member Kenneth Mitchell, and $2.1 million allocated by Mayor Bloomberg. The design will include a new synthetic turf field for football and soccer, a new running track, a lawn, and pavements. Field facilities for discus throw, shot-put, javelin, high jump, pole vault, hurdles and steeplechase will also be included in the design. Recreation lighting will be installed to allow use of the field during the evening hours. A water fountain, spray mister and benches will complete the area.

Parks will also begin work on the second phase of construction at Seaside Nature Park, thanks to $3 million in funding from Mayor Bloomberg. This phase will include the construction of a shade structure and installation of nautical themed play equipment. Other additions will include swings with safety surfacing, benches, new pavements, spray shower area, a drinking fountain and drainage and water supply systems, sand play area, and park security lighting.

The plan will incorporate nature into the theme of the playground, with landscape boulders, trees, shrubs, groundcovers and other wetland plantings native to the local area. The project’s next phase will include the reconstruction of the bulkhead of the recreational fishing pier.

In July 2008, Parks cut the ribbon on the park’s $2.4 million first phase of renovation, which included a newly refurbished waterfront.
