January Events At Poe Park

January is full of events and activities at the Poe Park Visitor Center! From art making, tai chi classes, story writing and more, there’s always something happening at the Poe Park Visitor Center. In addition to the visitor center, Poe Cottage the original farmhouse dwelling where American writer, editor and literary critic Edgar Allen Poe lived, is located on the same site in Poe Park. Famous for his literary works such as The Raven, Murders in Rue Morgue and The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe rented the white farmhouse now known as Poe cottage in 1846 with his wife Virginia. Poe remained at the cottage until his death in 1849. The cottage originally stood on Kingsbridge Road to the east of its intersection with Valentine Avenue. In 1913 the cottage was moved to its present site about 450 feet north from its original location. In 1980 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Poe Park opened in 1902. There are 23 historic houses/landmarks located throughout the five boroughs and Poe Cottage is just one of the many you can visit. The 2nd Whimsical Winter Wonder exhibition presents paintings, illustrations, sculpture, photography and more of 12 emerging and established artists offering their interpretation of whimsy, winter and wonder. It is a show, not to be missed, for families and art aficionados of all ages. Also be there on Saturday, January 31st for the closing reception of the exhibition where you can meet and greet with the artists of this delightful exhibit and see an interactive painting demonstration by one of the artists.

Tai Chi – Prim Groover

Learn the correct Tai Chi walk, movement and breathing techniques for health, balance and well-being. These classes run every Friday for four weeks January 2, 9, 16, 23.

Learn how to take great photos with your cell phone. Nishanth Gopinathan offers proper framing and composition (including angles), subject placement, lighting, etc.

2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Le Petit Zen Art: Minimal Color

Through drawings, paintings and other techniques, adult participants will create miniature works (4”x6” or less) of Zen art. The instructing artist Lucy Aponte will demonstrate how to create intricate, delicate works, using repeating, strokes and patterns, creating detailed miniature art for display at home. There will be very minimal use of color, for a more dramatic effect.

Telling Poetry- Rivka

In this exciting workshop Story teller Rivka Willick works with participants to merge the art of storytelling with poetry to create a fresh and exciting performance style. She will illustrate the technique with Edgar Allen Poe’s classic poem ‘Annabel Lee’.

Block Printing #2

Join us for a DIY Block Printing workshop with Art Student League’s Daniel Colon. Handmade stamps are great for block printing wrapping paper, gift tags, fabric totes, etc. This event is in partnership with the Art Students League: Seeds of the League and is free and open to the public.
