QUEENS PARK RENAMED IN HONOR OF SELFLESS COMMUNITY MEMBER

On Wednesday, September 27, Commissioner Henry J. (StarQuest) Stern and Council Member Alfonso (Big Bear) Stabile renamed Cronston Triangle as Patricia A. Brackley Park. Patricia (Gardening Angel) Brackley was an outstanding volunteer for Parks, who did extensive work on Cronston Triangle. There, a 70-foot planter was put in, with annuals, ornamental grasses, perennials and shrubs. The benches have been repaired and painted, so that people can sit and enjoy the city skyline and sunset's and Brackley's beautiful gardening efforts.

Brackley also served on the Second District Board as Queens County Chairman and Flower Show Chairman. An active member of 2 garden clubs, she served 2 terms as President of the Shore Garden Club of Belle Harbor and Neponsit, and as Flower Show and House Tours Chairman for Belle Harbor Garden Club.

VOLUNTEERS FROM NYC BUSINESSES GIVE PELHAM FRITZ RECREATION CENTER A FRESH COAT OF PAINT

On Saturday, September 23, businesses from the New York area participated in a clean-up day at Pelham Fritz Recreation Center in Marcus Garvey Park. The day was an opportunity for dedicated volunteers to make a positive contribution to the city's public recreational facilities, performing general clean-up and giving the center a fresh coat of paint. Pelham Fritz Recreation Center offers a senior program, fitness facilities, and aerobic classes, and a computer resources area is in the works.

DESIGN DIVISION OBSERVES 20 YEARS IN FLUSHING MEADOWS CORONA PARK

Twenty years ago, on September 14, 1967, the Parks Department Design Division vacated Room 100 in the Arsenal and took up residence in the former World's Fair Administration Building in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The building, renamed the Olmsted Center by Commissioner Stern in 1983, has been the headquarters for Parks Capital Projects ever since.
