NYC PARKS HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL OCEAN BREEZE INVITATIONAL ON STATEN ISLAND

NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh led the opening ceremony for the 2017 Ocean Breeze Invitational where more than 5,000 athletes from across the country competed at NYC Parks’ state-of the-art Ocean Breeze facility.

“We are so excited that the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex has become such a widely popular facility for athletes across the country,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “Not only does the Staten Island community benefit from this space, but so do the thousands of talented young student athletes who visit and compete here.”

A signature competition for NYC Parks’ Ocean Breeze, the Invitational was the final event of the complex’s first “BIG4” track event where four elite level high school meets took place at the facility on Staten Island. In addition to the Invitational, the “BIG4” included the 63rd Annual Bishop Loughlin Games, the Ocean Breeze Holiday Festival, and the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games.

The Ocean Breeze Invitational spanned the course of two days with competitions taking place on January 28 and 29. Nearly 400 teams representing nine different states participated in the event.

Since opening in November of 2015, the Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex has hosted more than 100 major competitions including the 2016 USATF Hershey National Youth Indoor Track Championships.

The $118 million NYC Parks’ Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex was funded by the New York City PlaNYC initiative, with construction managed in coordination with the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC). The facility is a premier destination for athletic events, drawing competitors from around the country. The elite-level hydraulically-banked competition track will be able to be converted from eight to six lanes, can incline up to 4.5 feet, and will have commanding views of the nearby Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and even the Freedom Tower in lower Manhattan. The facility is outfitted with state of the art field event areas, timing systems, and a warm-up area that will feature fitness and cardio rooms and a covered parking to accommodate 160 cars.
