Parks Celebrates New Fields At Montbellier Park

Today, Parks Assistant Commissioner Ed Lewis ‘kicked off’ the opening of new turf fields at Montbellier Park with Community Board 12 District Manager Yvonne Reddick, members of the Montbellier family and local little league and soccer groups.

“Queens is not only the borough of trees, but the borough of sports,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “The new sports fields at Montbellier Park mean more playing time to get kids outside, become active and fit. We are grateful to Council Member Sanders and Mayor Bloomberg for funding this commitment in providing playing fields for all ages, particularly our future Olympians!”

Thanks to $2.6 million in funding from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Member Sanders, Montbellier Park now features all-weather turf fields for soccer and baseball along with drinking fountains, new trees and a chain-link fence.

Parks & Recreation has installed 94 synthetic turf fields since 1997, with 68 more on the way. These figures are driven by a major initiative to convert previously underused asphalt sites into active recreation space, while upgrading out-of-date properties into community assets.

This park honors Albert Montbellier (1899-1963). Born in Manhattan, Montbellier was a dedicated civic worker devoted to his Queens neighborhood for more than 35 years. He was a leader in the fight against air pollution and aviation noise and served on the Borough President’s Committee on Aviation Problems.
