Parks Cuts The Ribbon On Improvements To Montbellier Park

This past Monday, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe joined City Council Member James Sanders, members of Community Board 12, the Montbellier family, students from PS 37, and athletic leagues to cut the ribbon on almost $2 million in improvements to Montbellier Park.

“Montbellier Park is truly a gem of Springfield Gardens with new play equipment, a spray shower, benches and gorgeous native flowers, shrubs and grasses,” said Commissioner Benepe. “Thanks to generous allocation of almost $2 million from Council Member Sanders. This park has seen many improvements including a new turf field, drinking fountains and fencing that were installed in 2008. And, we are using funding from Mayor Bloomberg to restore the basketball courts.”

Thanks to an allocation of $1.8 million by Council Member Sanders, Montbellier Park was renovated with new play units that include challenging climbing features, new swings, a spray shower and benches. Native plantings and decorative grasses were planted as part of a new landscape design. Park users can now rest at a boulder seating area with bistro tables and chairs near the playground.

The project was designed by Jane Couch. The construction project manager was Anthony Williams and the contractor was UA Construction.

In 2008, Montbellier Park was improved thanks to $2.6 million in funding from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Council Member Sanders. All-weather turf fields for soccer and baseball were installed, along with drinking fountains, new trees and a chain-link fence.

This park honors Albert Montbellier (1899-1963). Born in Manhattan, Montbellier was a dedicated civic worker devoted to his Queens neighborhood for more than 35 years. He was a leader in the fight against air pollution and aviation noise and served on the Borough President’s Committee on Aviation Problems.
