Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, State Senator-elect Tony Avella, Council Member Daniel Halloran, Parks Committee Chair for Community Board 7 Kim Ohanian, President of the Freedom Run Association Miguel Chavez and community dog owners cut the ribbon on Little Bay Park’s new dog run.

“The Parks Department is dedicated to bringing world class facilities to all park users, including our four-legged fans,” said Parks Commissioner Benepe. “Dog runs are a great place to meet your neighbors and for your canines to make friends. I would like to thank Senator-elect Avella’s generous allocation of $500,000 for this project. And on behalf of our furry friends – yip, yip, hooray!”

Thanks to $500,000 allocated by the City Council, Little Bay Park now has a permanent dog run. Community members requested the dog area, which was a pilot program until 2006, when the Community Board voted in favor of the construction of permanent structure. The dog park features a four-foot-high chain link perimeter fence, stone screen surface and an under drainage system. It is separated into two areas to accommodate smaller dogs and includes a drinking fountain, benches and plantings to provide shade and screening. An asphalt path connects the dog run to the waterfront path and to Utopia Parkway.

Little Bay Park’s bike path was recently widened and plans for $3.8 million in improvements is slated over the next two years to expand the parking lot and add a comfort station. K-9 Caterers from Glendale donated doggie giveaways. There are 27 dog runs in Queens and more than 100 citywide.
