American basswoodMid-park, along a path near the northern lawn

On November 20, 2015, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver joined Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and the New York Restoration Project's founder Bette Midler to celebrate the planting of this American basswood as the one-millionth tree of the MillionTreesNYC initiative. MillionTreesNYC launched in 2007 as an initiative to plant and care for one million trees in New York City. We partnered with the New York Restoration Project, who helped plant 250,000 of these trees on varied landscapes, and eight years later, we planted our millionth tree! This tree marks the completion of this landmark program that became a renowned greening model for cities worldwide.
