Recently completed $2.4 million capital project created a skating area, other amenities at Bronx playground

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue was joined by elected officials and community members today to unveil a newly completed skate park at Jerome Playground South in the Bronx.

"We're thrilled to introduce the new skate park at Jerome Playground South! As we continue to enhance essential recreational spaces in the Bronx, we've turned a little-used site into a first-class destination for local skating enthusiasts," said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. "At Parks, community input is essential to all of our capital projects, and we're proud to add improvements that local residents suggested to make this playground better than ever."

A $2.4 million capital project converted the playground’s little-used handball courts into a new skate park. The revamped space, located near the Cross Bronx Expressway, comes equipped with skate features such as concrete structures, railings, walls, and ramps. New benches, a water fountain, and a bike rack were also added.

Construction was completed in September 2023.

The project was funded by former New York City Council Member Fernando Cabrera and former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

"This park will provide our community with a great new space to skate and bike in. It is great to see the investment the City made in 2019 come to fruition,” said State Assemblymember Latoya Joyner. “We need more safe spaces like this for residents to relax and have fun with friends and family.”

“The new skate park at Jerome Avenue South is a welcomed addition to our borough that will provide opportunities for our residents to safely recreate and maintain a healthy lifestyle while reducing stress and other factors that contribute to poor health outcomes for our youth and their families,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “This project also serves as a great example of what can be done when we work together to transform underdeveloped and underutilized recreational space into something beneficial for our communities. I want to thank NYC Parks, former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and New York City Council Member Fernando Cabrera, and everyone else who played a role in the renovation of the skate park for their investment in our greenspaces.”
