Parks & Recreation Unveils New, Improved Hell’s Kitchen Park

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Community Board 4 Park Committee Chair John Doswell to cut the ribbon on $1.24 million worth of improvements to Hell’s Kitchen Park, thanks entirely to the allocation by Council Speaker Quinn.

"Hell’s Kitchen Park has become the central spot for recreation for the Hell’s Kitchen community," said Commissioner Benepe. "We are grateful to Speaker Quinn for allocating almost $1 million toward this much-needed project and helping us create a safer and more enjoyable environment for children young and old."

"Hell's Kitchen has always played a pivotal role in the development of New York," said Council Speaker C. Quinn. "With the renovation of Hell's Kitchen Park, we strengthen what is already one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods. I am proud to have been a part of this process and I thank everyone who has helped make this day a reality."

The large-scale renovation of Hell’s Kitchen Park replaced outdated equipment with modern, handicapped-accessible features for adults and children of all ages. The .58 acre Park now boasts new play equipment for pre-teens and toddlers, a spray shower area, game tables, tot-sized benches and picnic tables, and new handball, volleyball, and basketball courts. New drinking fountains, steel fencing, safety surfacing, drainage, decorative pavement, storage facilities, and lighting were also installed, and flowers, shrubs and new evergreen trees were planted.

Hell’s Kitchen Park was opened to the public in 1979 on the former site of a parking lot after lobbying by local parents for a safe place for children to play. Many civic and community organizations contribute to the continued safety and improvement of the park.
