Parks & Recreation Cuts Ribbon At Hamilton-Metz Field In Brooklyn

Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe today joined Council Member Yvette Clarke, Representative to the Brooklyn Borough President Kevin Parris, District Manager of Community Board 9 Pearl Miles, and children from the Police Athletic League and the Von King Cultural Arts Center to celebrate the completion of restorations to Hamilton-Metz Field.

Council Member Clarke allocated $1,570,000 for a synthetic turf multi-purpose ballfield. The

ballfield design is complemented by bleachers, dugouts, a drinking fountain and perimeter chain-

link fencing. Mayor Bloomberg allocated $300,000 for improvements to the playground. The

playground features new play equipment, swings, safety surfacing, plantings, benches and tables.

"This project has transformed Hamilton Metz Park into a state-of-the-art multi-use facility that will greatly benefit nearby residents," said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Parks & Recreation is committed to creating clean and beautiful spaces for children and adults. Thanks to the support of Mayor Bloomberg and Council Member Clarke, we are pleased to provide a new playground and synthetic turf ballfield as an example of our commitment."

It was also announced at the ceremony that Mayor Bloomberg has allocated an additional $840,000 for a third phase of renovations. Currently in design, it will include new basketball courts, handball courts, and a sitting area with plantings and benches.

After cutting the ribbon, Commissioner Benepe and Council Member Clarke joined the children in attendance in playing baseball and cricket on the new field.

Hamilton-Metz Field is named for America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, former Congress Member Herman Metz, and his wife Laura Metz. The site was acquired by Parks in 1940 to provide the community with an active recreation area.
