NYC PARKS UNVEILS $3.65 MILLION TRANSFORMATION OF GRANT PARK IN THE BRONX

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, today joined Deputy Bronx Borough President Marricka Scott-McFadden, State Assembly Member Latoya Joyner, City Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson, District Manager Paul Philps and Parks Chair Paul Lozito of Bronx Community Board 4, and community members to officially unveil the reconstructed Grant Park.

“Grant Park is a vital community greenspace, and I’m thrilled to unveil its new features and amenities for the enjoyment of the entire community,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. “Thanks to support from the community and our elected officials, the new and improved Grant Park will be a focal point for rest, recreation, and relaxation, promoting positive mental and physical health for years to come.”

“The office of The Bronx Borough President has always made it a priority to provide quality park spaces and facilities as we continue to work to build a healthier Bronx,” said Deputy Bronx Borough President Marricka Scott-McFadden. “It is vital to the health and wellness of our kids that we provide outdoor space for them to run around and play, as they shape long-term habits and become adults. Our office has allocated $73,296,000 of funding towards 87 parks projects to improve and renovate our Bronx parks, including $1 million towards the renovation of Grant Park. I want to thank City Council Member Vanessa Gibson as well as the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the mayor’s office for all of their efforts in renovating Grant Playground.”

The Grant Park reconstruction project completely upgraded the park’s amenities for the community. New swings and play equipment for children of all ages have been added to the park, and the existing basketball court has been completely reconstructed. The park now also offers passive recreation features, including spray showers and benches, and updated security lighting. With a focus on climate resiliency, the park’s water and drainage supply system has been overhauled, with new native plantings added to the area.

The $3.65 million Grant Park Playground and Basketball Court Reconstruction project was funded with $652,000 from Mayor Bill de Blasio, $1 million from Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., and $2 million from City Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson.
