NYC PARKS UNVEILS SECOND PHASE OF IMPROVEMENTS TO BROOKLYN’S GLENWOOD PLAYGROUND

NYC Parks Brooklyn Borough Commissioner Martin Maher today joined City Council Member Jumaane Williams and local community members to cut the ribbon on the second phase of renovations at Glenwood Playground. This $2.5 million project was jointly funded by Council Member Williams ($2 million), and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams ($500,000).

“Over the last few years, Glenwood Playground has been completely transformed,” said Commissioner Maher. “Today’s ribbon cutting rounds out the long list of improvements made here, including the play equipment, which was unveiled in 2015. Thanks to the most recent generous funding from Borough President Adams and Council Member Williams, Glenwood Playground has a bright future.”

“I’m proud to have allocated funds to the renovation of this playground,” said Council Member Williams. “It’s important that children have a safe, and well-maintained place to enjoy themselves, particularly during the summer months when school is no longer in session. This playground has a tough history; however, with these changes made, I’m hopeful that the community will see this space as a safe environment for all to enjoy.”

The existing asphalt recreation area at Glenwood has been transformed into a multi-purpose play area with a brand new synthetic turf field, a new field-misting post to cool off the area in hot weather, new and improved handball courts, a new adult fitness area, and three brand new full court basketball courts. New seating, benches, and large caliper shade trees round out the many improvements to this neighborhood park.

In 2015, Council Member Williams joined forces with Mayor de Blasio to provide $838,000 for initial improvements to the playground, including brand new play equipment, gardens, benches, and pavement. The distinctive bright green safety surface and play area provides an inviting space for children and parents.

Glenwood Playground, located at the intersection of Ralph Avenue and Farragut Road, is named for nearby Glenwood Road. Originally named Avenue G, Glenwood Road was constructed in 1902 as part of the Brooklyn grid system. A local law of 1926 renamed the street with reference to the wooded land that it traversed.
