NYC PARKS BREAKS GROUND ON NEW $16.1 MILLION FERRY POINT PARK WATERFRONT PATH AND SALT WATER MARSH PROJECT

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, today joined State Assembly Member Michael Benedetto, City Council Member Mark Gjonaj, Parks Chair for Community Board 10 Terence Franklin, and members of the community to officially break ground on the new Ferry Point Park Waterfront Path and Salt Water Marsh.

“Ferry Point Park is in for a tremendous transformation, and I’m so excited to officially break ground on this project,” said Commissioner Silver. “Thanks to a generous $16.1 million allocation from Mayor Bill de Blasio, this location will soon be an entirely new greenspace for the community to enjoy, boasting wonderful scenic views of the east river and helping to revitalize to local ecosystem.”

The $16.1 million Ferry Point Waterfront Path and Salt Water Marsh project will transform the eastern portion of Ferry Point Park and add over an acre and a half of salt water marshland. When completed, the park will include a brand new pedestrian path, scenic views overlooking the East River, parking for 12 vehicles, and a saltwater marsh. A majority of the site will be planted as an open maritime grassland, which will extend to the edges of the existing golf course. The 1.62 acre tidal salt marsh will help to restore ecological diversity in the area.

This project was funded by a $16.1 million allocation from Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The land on which Ferry Point Park is built was part of the Throgmorton Grant of 1642 which was farmed by a series of families through the following two centuries. The park was named for the ferries that travelled between the Bronx and Queens, from Westchester Village to Whitestone, and from Clason Point to College Point. Ferry Point Park has been developed on a site that was a former municipal landfill. The western portion of the park (west of the Bridge and the Hutchison River Parkway) was developed as athletic fields and passive parkland in 1939.
