Completed capital project brings a new restroom building and bocce courts to Fairview Park, while recently started construction will revamp the synthetic turf field at Greenbelt Recreation Center.
On August 29, NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined Council Member Joseph Borelli, Council Member David Carr, and Borough President Vito Fossella to celebrate improvements to Staten Island parks.
Parks recently completed construction on a public restroom building at Fairview Park – the first in the park’s history – featuring accessible stalls and expanding restroom amenities for parkgoers. The project also added two new adjacent bocce courts, a paved plaza, benches, and tree plantings. The $4.2 million initiative was funded by the New York City Council, Staten Island Borough President, and Mayor’s Office.
Later that day at Greenbelt Recreation Center, officials broke ground on a project to construct a new synthetic turf field adjacent to the recreation center. When completed in summer 2024, the $5.5 million project – funded by the City Council – will add a new stormwater management system, four new field lighting towers, and a new accessible pathway in addition to the turf field being created.
“We’re thrilled to bring important new enhancements to ‘the borough of parks!’ Visitors to Fairview Park now have access to restroom facilities for the first time as well as new bocce courts to enjoy, while the new synthetic field at Greenbelt will provide community members with a revitalized, accessible, and safe playing area,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “We’re committed to continually improving our park amenities to better serve residents and visitors for years to come.”
"This new park has been seeing more and more visitors using the fields, pickleball, tennis, and bocce ball courts,” said Council Member Joseph Borelli. “This new restroom is the final piece of this puzzle and is the second of four new park bathrooms my office has recently funded."
“This synthetic turf field project will upgrade a vital amenity and make it an even better place for Staten Islanders. It will also include lighting upgrades so the fields can be used longer each day, said Council Member David Carr. "Thank you to NYC Parks for getting this started.”
