Creating Community Over Quesadillas

Robert (Mizzou) Lawson

Drifting out of the Arsenal Gallery windows last night was a strong scent of sauteed onion and a hint of pungent cheese. One could hear the crackle of oil hopping in the pan. Writers, administrators, and recreational staff left their offices and their marketable skills behind to don the proverbial chefs hat, and showcase instincts rarely called for on the job at Parks: a sixth sense for spices and a flare for culinary invention. Some of us fared better than others. In a play on "Harvest in the Square", an annual fundraising event in which the specialties of local chefs may be sampled in Union Square, Parks held its first "Harvest in the Arsenal" last night as part of the Class Of program. Teams were asked to assemble recipes in one of four categories: pasta, quesadillas, salads, or smoothies, and a friendly team of volunteers supplied the ingredients, the pots and pans, the hot plates and the dessert. Three judges, and many eager onlookers taste-tested the fruits of their colleagues' labor and judged accordingly. Participating chefs represented five Parks buildings: The Arsenal, Arsenal North, Arsenal West, Litchfield and Overlook. In all, 11 teams participated and chefs spanned the ages of Class Of '95 to Class Of '00. Congratulations to Sarah (Ground Zero) Kay and all those who helped organize this culinary extravaganza.

FLAG FOOTBALL FESTIVAL SUCCEEDS AGAIN

On Saturday, October 14th from 11-3 pm at Liberty Park in Queens, Parks hosted its second Annual Flag Football Festival. Sponsored by the City Parks Foundation, the festival provided a mid-season break in the Parks Flag Football League, which is run in conjunction with the Police Athletic League and the NFL. 1000 boys and girls ages 8-14 participate in the league. Children participated in 11 interactive venues: football games, obstacle courses, accuracy toss, speed toss, tug of war, 40 yard-dash, field goal kick, a clinic by the Queens Falcons, moon bounce, face painting, and board games. Deputy Commissioner Robert (Iceman) Garafola welcomed the participants and introduced the cheerleading teams at the halftime cheerleading contest. Each venue was equipped with giveaways for the children to take home as memorabilia, and each participant received a specially designed Flag Football Festival tee shirt. Thanks to all Parkies that helped to make this day a success! We hope to continue in this tradition next year by expanding with new ideas and more participants.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Sadder than destitution, sadder than a beggar is the man who eats alone in public. Nothing more contradicts the laws of man or best, for animals always do each other the honor of sharing or disputing each other's food.

Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
