This Weekend In Parks

Citywide

School’s out and what better way to celebrate than going for a swim at one of the 54 outdoor pools across the city! Pools will be open all summer long until Labor Day. Indoor pools remain open year-round. General hours of operation are 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. As always, please remember to swim smart and swim safe. Parks reminds you to follow pool rules, listen to lifeguards, know your swimming limits and most of all, have fun!

Staten Island

The Conference House Pavilion will be alive with the sound of music this Saturday, June 28, when the Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra performs a free outdoor concert. In anticipation of the Fourth of July, the concert will include a selection of patriotic music. Be sure to bring your own chairs and arrive before the concert starts at 4:00 p.m.

Queens

Join the Urban Park Rangers for canoeing along Norton Basin in Bayswater Park. Canoes, lifejackets and instruction will be provided. This special event will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 28. Children eight years and older can participate with a parent. Call (718) 318-4000 to register.

Manhattan

Jump off a ferry boat and circle a piece of Manhattan at the Fourth Annual Governors Island Swim taking place this Sunday, June 29, from 12:40 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. This challenging two-mile swim around the birthplace of New York City offers breathtaking views of Lower Manhattan, Jersey City, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and (of course) Governors Island itself. The island will be open to the public during the event, so bring the entire family and make a day of it. Sign up to swim, or come to spectate and cheer on others.

Bronx

The rocky coast of Pelham Bay provides habitat for an abundance of shorebirds. Join the Urban Park Rangers this Sunday to explore Orchard Beach and look for herons, egrets, ibises and many more of our feathered friends. The bird search begins at 2:00 p.m.

Brooklyn

“Who, who, who… did I eat?” You might be asking yourself that question if you are an owl. Learn about the web of life and what owls eat by dissecting owl pellets. Come to Marine Park at 1:00 p.m. this Sunday to discover the varied diet of owls and how they hunt and capture prey.
