FIVE ARTISTS EXAMINE THE NATURAL WORLD AND FOUND OBJECTS IN GROUP SHOW “OTHER HOMES”

NYC Parks presents “Other Homes,” a new exhibition of work by Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday, and Nyugen Smith at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park through June 15. Curated by Audra Lambert of Antecedent Projects, “Other Homes” considers the role of organic materials within the lexicon of contemporary art, specifically in found and assemblage art. The five artists in this show consider the effects that natural environments exert on contemporary art. Their works consider the intimacy of people with the natural environment, while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

At its heart, the exhibit probes the complex relationship between contemporary culture and the natural world. With his “Spirit Carriers” series, Smith examines the weight of cultural heritage in assembled artworks. Hornaday uncovers the delicate consideration of objects in assemblage and displays the evocative power of clay as a medium. Grokhovsky’s two- and three-dimensional found object artworks remain simultaneously subtle and provocative. Andrij?i?-Ojeda synthesizes materials in numerous forms of natural and processed material, combining the various elements into fragile yet harmonious compositions. Bunge creates abstract sculptural forms with wood in its natural state, allowing found branches to reveal their natural expressions.

Antecedent Projects (AP) is an arts platform founded in 2014 by independent curator and art critic Audra Lambert in response to New York City's eroding cultural legacies. By partnering with contemporary artists and cultural partners, AP examines critical parts of artistic heritage while also mounting engaging exhibitions and projects which create compelling stories for diverse audiences.

Parks’ Arsenal Gallery is dedicated to examining themes of nature, urban space, wildlife, New York City parks and park history.
