Previously scheduled for February 4th and 5th, 2006

Due to the unseasonably warm climate, we are unable to create snow in Central Park’s East

Meadow, thus forcing us to cancel the activities previously scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 4th and 5th.

Winter Festival, an annual event usually held in the East Meadow of Central Park, features various winter activities, almost all of which require snow. With temperatures forecasted in the 40s and 50s throughout the week, artificial snow cannot be generated in time for the weekend.

Although Winter Festival is cancelled, we will still host the first-ever NYC Rail Jam on Sunday, February 5th, at Central Park’s Naumburg Bandshell from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., which will offer participants the opportunity to watch incredible stunts performed by some of the most skilled snowboarders around. Details on Sunday’s Rail Jam will follow.

"Once again, Mother Nature has made the executive decision to cancel our annual Winter Festival," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Despite months of planning and coordination, the one factor that lies beyond our control ultimately forced us to make this decision. While we are disappointed that we cannot bring Winter Festival to Central Park this year, the Rail Jam event on Sunday will be an exciting and unique performance for spectators. We urge New Yorkers to get out and enjoy Rail Jam and all our parks this weekend."
