THE EBONY SOCIETY HOSTS THEIR NINTH ANNUAL LIGHT OF THE WORLD AWARDS CEREMONY

On Thursday, February 15, 2001, the Ebony Society Black History Committee staged their annual Light of the World Award Ceremony in the Arsenal Gallery. Richard (Dad) S. Cox, President of the Ebony Society welcomed a crowd of over 70 Parkies and their friends and family members. Reverend Victor Edmonds of the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church offered an invocation, and then Jackie (Nightingale) Rowe-Adams treated to the crowd to her renditions of the National Anthem and the Black National Anthem. Commissioner Henry J. (StarQuest) Stern addressed the crowd, praising the Ebony Society for promoting "work relationships that invigorate our commitment to Parks." Lee (General) Henry and Richard Cox presented the awards. Stephanie Harris closed the ceremony.

The annual Light of the World Awards honor the contributions of eight exemplary Parkies and one volunteer. These are individuals from all five boroughs who have positively impacted Parks. Congratulations to those recognized with awards: Dee (Phins) Hughes, Executive Assistant in Labor Relations; Geoff (Silk) Huston, Recreation Specialist; James Keaton (shown above), Director of Sports Activities for Brooklyn Recreation; John Bouknight, WEP Crew Chief for District 6; Maxine Clark Principle Administrative Associate at the Roy Wilkins Recreation Center; Robert Dale, CPW; Lofton (Logic) Johnson of Customer Service and Repairs at Five Boro; Matthias (Augur) Augustin, Deputy Director of Brooklyn Construction; and Karriema Jordan-Daliah, recipient of the Community Award.

The Ebony Society was founded in May of 1985 by Walter (Caballero) Adams and John (Referee) Purvis. The Society counts 192 Parkies as members. It has organized and hosted the Light of the World Awards Ceremony since 1992. The Society works to "develop a spirit of brotherhood, fellowship, and solidarity among its members," reaching out to African-American Parkies in all five boroughs, aiming to draw them into community with one another. Among their activities, the Society has held study sessions for the civil service exams, and meetings to share information about opportunities at Parks. Thanks to the Society and the History Committee for organizing the event.
