JAC AND PACT JOB FAIR A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS
On October 24, 2002, the Job Assistance Center (JAC) and Parks Career Training Program (PACT) held their 5th semi-annual job fair at Carmine Recreation Center. The job fair focused on providing job leads to POP and WEP participants, particularly those POPs ending their seasonal jobs in October, November and December.
Approximately 600 WEP and POP participants attended the fair, as well as 33 companies. The day was an enormous success. Both employers and job candidates left the fair with great hopes for future opportunities. One company commented before they left the fair, "I’ve taken 16 resumes that meet my requirements and will interview them next week. The fair was well organized, with a nice breakfast and friendly staff."
The day began at 9am with a breakfast for the employers. Nora Ferguson (Director of JAC), Jill Weber (Director of PACT) and Deputy Commissioner Robert Garafola welcomed companies and provided them with information on the two programs.
Some of those companies that attended include: BJ’s Wholesale Club, Central Parking Systems, CarePlus, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Creative Lifestyles, DAOR Security, EarnFair LLC, The Gap, HealthPlus, Kinkos, Marriot Hotel, MTA, New York Restoration Project, NYPD School Safety, and US Department of Agriculture.
The JAC and PACT programs work with approximately 1,000 WEP participants and 3,000 POP participants in the Parks Opportunity Program (POP) in NYC Parks. To date, JAC and PACT have found employment for over 2,750 participants.

"PLANT PROFILE"
Jada Thorpe
Jada Thorpe joined the Personnel Division at Parks in June 1997. She has performed a variety of duties in her five years with the Agency, including assisting new employees with hiring paperwork, reviewing qualifications, entering personnel data into the Payroll Management System, and conducting background investigations. Outside of Parks, Jada indulges her love of singing, working professionally with the group Saige and performing at the Apollo, the Cotton Club, and other venues. At the Boston Road Ballroom, where she participated in talent shows and was known as "the coat room lady," she met the love of her life, Clifford Burks, who played saxophone for Little Richard's band The Upsetters. Jada is also very active at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in the Bronx, where she is a choir director and volunteers to help the less fortunate in her community.
Jada came to Parks through the Work Experience Program, having previously worked for the Board of Education, and is a true success story for the Agency. Her greatest joy is helping others, and the Personnel Division is proud to have Jada as part of the Parks family.
QUOTATION FOR THE DAY
"Land is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything,
for ‘tis the only thing in this world that lasts....
‘Tis the only thing worth working for, worth fighting for—worth dying for."
Margaret Mitchell
