This park honors Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), a historian, author, and founder of the concept that would eventually become known as Black History Month. Woodson earned a master’s degree at the University of Chicago and he became the second African American man to earn a doctorate from Harvard University (after W. E. B. Du Bois).
