A Concessionaire Story: Bringing Exquisite Dining to the Community with Melba Wilson
NYC Parks is proud to welcome Melba’s to Central Park’s Wollman Rink! Having opened in June of 2022, Melba’s is founded by Melba Wilson, who opened Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem in 2005. Melba’s Restaurant is regarded as one of New York City’s premier comfort food destinations, providing an exquisite yet comfortable dining experience to the community where Melba was born and raised. Now, visitors to Central Park and Wollman Rink can enjoy some of the delicious food that is synonymous with the Melba’s brand. Located at The Overlook above the rink, the café features a smorgasbord of flavorful menu items, ranging from signature dishes of southern fried chicken & eggnog waffles and café exclusives such as Melba’s DiscOasis fries. Melba spoke with us about her new venture in Central Park.
This interview was recorded in July 2022.
NYC Parks: What line of work were you in prior to starting Melba’s?
Melba Wilson: Initially I worked on Wall Street but I then moved into the hospitality field. I started as a cashier at Sylvia's; began hosting a Gospel Brunch at Windows on the World, and worked front of the house at Rosa Mexicano.
NYC Parks: What inspired you to start Melba’s?
MW: Being born, bred and buttered in Harlem I was inspired by the community that raised me. I wanted to lead by example and use entrepreneurship to employ and uplift those around me.
NYC Parks: What sort of food/drink offerings can be found at Melba’s?
MW: Southern American Comfort Food which has fed the likes of The Duke and Dutchess, DJ Khaled, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder and many more.
NYC Parks: What locations do you operate in addition to Wollman Rink?
MW: Melba’s Restaurant can be found at 114th Street & Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem, and we also have an upcoming location in Newark, New Jersey.
NYC Parks: How do you find operating a business inside of Central Park?
MW: It is a pleasure and honor to operate in one of the world's most iconic parks. Central Park is not only an integral part of New York City but the global community at large.
NYC Parks: What are your hours of operation at Central Park?
MW: Wednesday through Sunday from 3 pm – 9 pm
NYC Parks: Is there anything else you’d like to communicate?
MW: If I can, so can you. If I can, you can too. As the great Harriet Tubman said, every dream begins with a dreamer.
