Wheelchair Football Comes To Parks
DATE: Thursday, November 16th, 2006
TIME: 11:00 a.m.
LOCATION: Victory Field (Woodhaven Blvd. between Forest Park Drive and Myrtle Avenue), Forest Park, QUEENS
EVENT & PHOTO-OP: Experience the exhilarating sport of Wheelchair Football as Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, representatives from the United Spinal Association, and a representative from the New York Giants dedicate the first Wheelchair Football field in the State at Victory Field in Forest Park in Queens.
DETAILS: Disabled athletes from around the City will showcase the sport of Wheelchair Football in an exhibition game. The two teams are sponsored by the New York Giants and the United Spinal Association. The new field will be used for practices and games, with plans to host a Wheelchair Football tournament. The adaptive sport was invented in the early 1970's. Its rules are adapted from the rules of 6-on-6 flag football, and it is played on asphalt, which is easier to maneuver in a wheelchair.
The Parks & Recreation Department has partnered with United Spinal Association, a national membership organization enhancing the lives of people with spinal cord injuries and disorders. The Association sponsors a wide variety of wheelchair recreational and adaptive sports programs guided by the belief that the benefits of participating in sports are no different for athletes with disabilities than for able-bodied athletes. Membership is free and open to all individuals with disabilities of the spinal cord. For more information please visit www.unitedspinal.org or call 800-404-2898.
