Tree Details

Species: American elm (Ulmus americana)
Trunk Diameter 38 Inches

The silhouette of this American elm on the hill in Sunset Park was used as the advertising photo for the 2023 Great Tree Search. Iconic, unforgettable, and impactful, find a spot under this tree at the center of the park to see a breathtaking view of Manhattan. This tree with the slight lean but an amazing sun-grown crown once had a large limb that nearly stretched all the way down to the ground, frequently used by local children as a climbing tool. Although that limb has since been removed, the tree is still a favorite that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
