Tree Details

Species: Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)

The mansion of the United Order of Tents is a Black women's fraternal order that was established in the 19th century. The order originally provided aid to those escaping slavery via the Underground Railroad. The benevolent society has been servicing their community for more than 150 years, and the tall ginkgo tree in the front yard contributes to the beauty of their mission. As one of the oldest living tree species in the world, this tree symbolically helps hold and preserve Black history in New York City.
