Tree Details

Species: Japanese maple (Acer palmatum)

This gnarled and sculptural tree was planted as a group of four but is one of more than 300 old Japanese maples in Woodlawn Cemetery. During the 1900s, gardeners and landscape designers planted this delicate, new species all over the Cemetery while cultivating the understanding that Japanese maples should not be pruned. Over the decades, the natural form of the trees has been allowed to develop beautifully. This single, sculptural maple is a representative of the entire Japanese maple collection at Woodlawn.
