The sugar maple at Wave Hill is located south of the Shade Border and west of the Aquatic Garden. The exact age of the tree is unknown, it may have been planted by estate owners or it could have been a wild sapling, planted by nature. We estimate that this tree started growing sometime in the early to mid-1800s—making it close to 200 years old. Its bark exhibits the characteristic plates of old sugar maples. A bench sits underneath this tall tree, offering a lovely view of the surrounding specimens and Wave Hill House. This tree has lost numerous limbs over the years, giving it a slender appearance.
