Davis Oak at Stuyvesant Place

Borough: Staten Island
Community Board: 01
Designated: 2024

Tree Details

Species: Swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor)
Trunk Diameter 43 Inches

This hybrid oak species was discovered by acclaimed Staten Island naturalist William T. Davis in the Tottenville section of the Island. The unique hybrid is a result of where the two species (black and willow oak) geographic growing ranges overlap. The willow oak is a more southern growing species while the black oak is a more northern growing species. This tree is a wonderful representation of this hybrid species and the vast knowledge Mr. Davis accumulated and documented about Staten Island and the city.
