Tree Details

Species: Weeping willow (Salix babylonica)
Trunk Diameter 39 Inches

In an El Jardin del Paraiso chronology written in the '90s, Liz Christy and the Green Guerrillas were acknowledged for their activism in the community garden movement of the Lower East Side in the early 1970s. It is believed that Liz planted El Jardin's existing two weeping willow trees. In 1999, Lower East Side artist and community garden member Roderick Romero proposed and built a tree sculpture with a platform that visitors could climb into called Tree Nest. After several years of wear and tear on the structure, a local pre-K school who was using the space proposed a new and more viable tree structure for younger kids to play on—which is the structure you see today.
