In October 2001, a lone callery pear tree was found amidst the rubble of the World Trade Center site. It had sustained extensive damage, but it had survived the attacks of September 11, 2001. The tree was transported to the Arthur Ross Nursery in Van Cortlandt Park, where it was nursed back to health by NYC Parks staff. Growing from a height of eight feet to over 30 feet tall, the tree, now known as the "Survivor Tree," was returned to the Memorial Plaza on December 22, 2010, where it continues to grow as a symbol of the nation's resilience.
