Ebonacea: a celebration of Black History Month

The Ebony Society's Black History Committee and Parks presents its annual art exhibit in honor of Black History Month at the historic Arsenal Gallery in Central Park. Entitled, "Ebonacea," this show features a sampling of some of the artistic and creative talents of Parks employees, family members, Parks seniors and adult recreation center members and retirees of Parks. As in years past, this show will feature a variety of media: handcrafted quilts, photographs, paintings and handcrafts.

A main feature of the exhibit is the handmade quilt. The quilts that adorn the walls of the Gallery are designed and crafted by African-American women, who see it not only as a part of their cultural heritage, but as a way to incorporate their artistic vision and abilities with their own personal history. The works in the exhibition, not only celebrate the creative talents of our Parkies, but also recognizes the time-honored traditions that have been practiced within African-American communities for centuries.
