Beach Accessibility

To ensure that our beaches are accessible for all, we’ve installed beach mats in selected areas so that beachgoers with mobility devices can safely travel from the boardwalk all the way to the high tide line.  We also provide beach wheelchairs for beachgoers with disabilities to use throughout the day at no cost to navigate further distances along our beaches.

Beach wheelchairs can only be used during beach season, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Check back to reserve a beach wheelchair two days before next Memorial Day Weekend.

Visit our Accessible Beaches page to see the current Citywide locations of our beach mats.

Please make sure to reserve a beach wheelchair 48 hours in advance of your visit to the beach. You can reserve a beach wheelchair by clicking on the beach of your choice below. Please read the instructions below before submitting your request form

Beach Wheelchair Usage Instructions

The City of New York (the “City”), acting by and through the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (“NYC Parks”) is pleased to provide beach wheelchairs (“Wheelchair”) for patrons in need of mobility assistance to access the beaches under NYC Parks’ jurisdiction.

Wheelchair Usages, Rules, & Regulations

Wheelchairs can only be used from Memorial Day through Sunday after Labor Day, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Use of the Wheelchair is by reservation only. Wheelchairs are available for up to three (3) hours of use free of charge. Reservations can be made online or by calling (718) 885-2275. Although last-minute onsite requests on the day of your visit may be accommodated, depending on availability, we highly recommend reservations during the summer season, particularly on weekends and holidays.

Please pick up your reserved Wheelchair from the designated location. Upon completing your reserved time, you must return the Wheelchair to the designated station.
