NYC PARKS CUTS THE RIBBON ON RECONSTRUCTION OF HAROLD SCHNEIDERMAN PLAYGROUND IN LINDENWOOD

NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jacqueline Langsam joined Borough President Donovan Richards, Councilmember Joann Ariola, Community Board 10 Chairperson Betty Braton, representatives from the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic Association and Queens community members to cut the ribbon on the newly reconstructed Harold Schneiderman Playground in Lindenwood. A $3.5 million investment from City Council and the Queens Borough President transformed the playground and recreation area with upgraded play and water features, fitness and open play spaces, and updated landscaping and seating.

“NYC Parks is inviting residents from Lindenwood, Howard Beach and beyond to visit the new and improved Harold Schneiderman Playground,” said NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jacqueline Langsam. “Thanks to funding from City Council and the Queens Borough President, this beautiful community playground has been upgraded with engaging new play equipment for children of all ages, exercise and open space for New Yorkers to stay active and fit, and improved seating areas for relaxing and taking in the outdoors. We look forward to the community enjoying this space for generations to come”

"We are on a mission to give our kids the best outdoor experience possible, and it starts with upgrading our parks and playgrounds," said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. "Our office is happy to have helped fund the renovation of Harold Schneiderman Playground in Lindenwood. I hope our kids and families will make great use of it."

"The families of Lindenwood and students at PS 232 have waited a long time for this day, and I'm proud to be here to see this finally happen," said New York City Councilmember Joann Ariola. "This play area now not only has all new equipment, but it also has things specifically designed to cater to residents with disabilities. With these things, we can make sure that all students and children in the area can enjoy this playground, and it can become a focal point for the community for years to come."

"Community Board 10 is pleased that the $3.5 million reconstruction of Harold Schneiderman Playground is now completed. The funding for the Schneiderman Playground was provided through the efforts of the area's former City Council member and then Borough President, Melinda Katz, not long before the Covid pandemic impacted our city,” said Chairperson for Queens Community Board 10 Betty Braton. “We thank the current Council member, Joann Ariola and current Borough President, Donovan Richards, and all the Park's staff for their efforts to insure this project moved to fruition. Thousands of children will enjoy Schneiderman Playground as we move into the future."

The new play area features equipment designed for children aged 2-5, as well as more challenging equipment for the 5-12-year-old age bracket. New spray features, located centrally in the playground, will offer respite from the heat on summer days, and the trees and updated landscaping will ensure visitors can stay longer and enjoy the new outdoor greenspace. The upgraded exercise equipment ensures that visitors have a place to keep fit and stay active.

Added benches, water fountains, bike racks and paved pathways make the space a vital community hub, as well as a place for visitors to relax and enjoy fresh air.

Harold Schneiderman Playground is named in honor of Harold Schneiderman (1926-1985), a local resident who lived the last 25 years of his life in Howard Beach and was involved in a wide number of community and charitable organizations.
